C O LICO
one step away from everything!
Located in the northernmost part of the eastern shore of Lake Como, Colico develops close to what was once a swamp and today is the magnificent Pian di Spagna and Lago Mezzola Nature Reserve. The territory is characterized by the variety and beauty of its landscapes that flank the lake, among which the imposing Monte Legnone, the four hills of morainic origin, the three Montecchi and the Olgiasca peninsula stand out.
A combination of lake and mountain that makes it an ideal and sought-after destination for those who love nature, relaxation and history but at the same time sport, active life and fun. Thanks to its breezy position and its numerous beaches, Colico has become over the years a recognized resort of international fame for the practice of water sports. Mount Legnone, with its 2609 meters, is loved by hikers for the countless routes for all levels of preparation and for the breathtaking views it can offer. For cyclists and bikers, the varied network of paths offers ancient paths halfway up the coast and the cycle path that leads to Bormio, in Alta Valtellina.
Colico is also particularly suitable for travelers who wish to travel to reach different cities and points of interest : the town has been an important communication center since ancient times, as the roads from Lecco, Valtellina and Valchiavenna intersect in Colico. . Due to its strategic position it is an area rich in history, as demonstrated by the two military forts, the seventeenth-century Forte di Fuentes and the Forte Montecchio Nord, dating back to the First World War. The first was built by the Count of Fuentes during the Spanish domination to control the communication routes, the second was built between 1912 and 1914 to close the route leading to Milan.
And again Villatico and its mills, the historic center and the ancient village of Fontanedo, once inhabited by numerous peasant families and characterized by the tower built in 1357 by the Visconti on the defensive line of the Upper Lario to protect access to the famous " Path of the Wayfarer ".
In Colico there are not only fortresses, but also expressions of faith such as the marvelous Abbey of Piona. Located on the Olgiasca Peninsula and with an exceptional view of the western coast of the Lario, the church with its suggestive cloister is a rare example of Lombard Romanesque architecture. Other churches worth mentioning for their artistic testimony are the Church of San Bernardino in Villatico and the Oratory of San Rocco.
Finally, the splendid lakefront, theater of events that enliven the summer evenings and from which you can enjoy a beautiful view of the west bank of the lake.
